Boy, 9, recovering after brother, 11, shot him near Tampa

A 9-year-old boy is recovering at Tampa General Hospital after authorities said his brother shot him in the face.
The boy is in serious condition, but the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says he is expected to get better.
The shooting happened just before 1 p.m. at a home along the 5000 block of Turkey Tree Ln. in the Dover area of Hillsborough County.
According to the sheriff’s office, there were three brothers home alone while their mother and sister were at work. They said the gun belonged to their mother’s friend and she used a padlock plus a hasp to lock her bedroom.
The brothers were able to remove the hasp and grab the gun from their mother’s bedroom, according to authorities. They played with the .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun outside and then went into their room.
The brothers are ages 13, 11, and 9.
Authorities said the middle child shot his little brother once.
Pat Bailey, a neighbor, described what she witnessed after the shooting.
“The kids came running up here, and you could tell by the way he was carrying on (that) he was bleeding,” Bailey said.
Bailey called 911. She said she put a wet towel on his face. She described what she saw as horrible.
“[The bullet] took his whole bottom lip and … most of this teeth were gone and his gums were [all] messed up,” Bailey said.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate. They have not filed any charges.
