Dog lovers make another push to allow canines on small stretch of Delray Beach

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Dog lovers are asking the city of Delray Beach to reconsider allowing canines on a stretch of its public beach.

A group called "Friends of Delray Dog Beach" has gathered more than 1,800 signatures in an online petition to change the rule that bans animals.

Members are working with the city's Department of Parks and Recreation to come up with a pitch to convince city commissioners of the idea.

The city has turned down a couple of past requests to allow dogs on the beach.

City leaders say it would be hard to make sure owners clean up after their pets.

The dog-friendly group says it only wants a small stretch of the beach to be open to dogs. It's proposing a program in which volunteers would help clean up the beach monthly.

The group also says allowing dogs could bring in extra revenue for the city, drawing in more people who would use parking meters and eat at nearby restaurants and increasing the amount of people paying for pet registration by making it mandatory that pets are registered in order to use the beach.

"Friends of Delray Dog Beach" is meeting at 6:30 Monday evening at the Delray Beach Community Center located on 50 NW 1st Ave. to discuss ways to pitch the plan to city commissioners.
