Recent shootings in West Palm Beach are gang related, mayor says

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.-- Wednesday morning, Mayor Jeri Muoio briefly addressed the recent spate of shootings in West Palm Beach.

The mayor said the shootings are gang related and some are acts of retaliation. Muoio said there are three "cliques" between downtown West Palm Beach and 36th Street, who are shooting each other to solve their problems.

"It's just unacceptable for that very many of these people are young people, thirteen, fourteen-year-old kids, with guns who are shooting each other," she said.

West Palm Beach police have been investigating several shootings since Sunday.

Three separate shootings occurred on Tuesday evening. One person was found deceased on N. Sapodilla Ave. Another person was injured on Grant Street. A third victim was shot at a West Palm Beach apartment complex.

The mayor is calling the violence unacceptable and says the city is working on a plan, but it needs the support from the community as well.

"We need people to come forward and tell us what they know," said Mayor Muoio.

Names of the victims in Tuesday's shootings have not been released at this time.
