Broward County Commissioner wants special legislative session to deal with Uber issue

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - After 1,000 Uber rides, driver Larry LeNeve is worried that reliable payday may disappear soon.

"I got a plan B," LeNeve said. "Everyone who gets in my car gets my business card."

Just in case Uber pulls out in Palm Beach County like it did in Broward.

"I think it's a strategy they employ to create political pressure if they don't get what they want," LeNeve said.

While LeNeve said he has no problem with fingerprints, Uber does. The stakes are high for Uber, and commissioners.

"There's some possibility for any of the commissioners that might not be in favor of Uber might be subject to a grassroots recall," LeNeve said. "I think it's too bad all this is going on. I hope the state will step in at some point."

A Broward County commissioner wants a special legislative session to deal with this since tourist season starts before the legislative season starts. There is a special session planned for August to deal with redistricting, but it would take a 2/3 vote by both the House and Senate to add something else to the docket.

"There is not going to be a special session on this," said Florida State Representative Irv Slosberg.

Slosberg said he thinks the state will weigh in during the January session.

"Sometimes issues like this have to be worked on for years before it crystallizes," Slosberg explained.

Three years later, and an Uber user, Slosberg admits, "I'm on the fence which way I am going. This is a very tough decision."

Palm Beach County will make its next decision in August. Drivers are watching closely just in case Uber leaves Palm Beach too.

"It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out," LeNeve said.

If Uber drivers become private drivers, they would have to be licensed by the county.
