FAU grad who helped start global health program graduates

BOCA RATON, Fla.- - A Florida Atlantic University pre-med student who spread the word about global health graduated in today's commencement ceremony.

Today marks a milestone for 23-year old Camilla Castro.

"My parents never graduated college, so this is something my family and I are really proud of," she explained.

And proud they are, as her Brazilian family watched the FAU pre-med student take her first steps into the auditorium to graduate.

She started an international relief work program in the Bahamas for students at the university. An opportunity to conduct research at places like an HIV-AIDS hospice and center for the disabled.

"The biggest limitation is the cost," said Castro. "So we wanted to provide something for students that would not cost as much and allow them to experience opportunities equally."

She got the university on board to fund the project. The cost just $350 for six days overseas. Not an easy feat but one she says she never stopped believing would come together.

"Courage is a really important thing when it comes to dreaming big and making things happen."

And in order to do that, she tells classmates to get involved and find mentors.

Castro plans to take the MCATS in January.
