STUART, Fla. - After more than 35 years, a Chicago murder suspect is finally in custody after he was arrested this week in Stuart.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday the arrest of 57-year-old Alvaro Flores, who was living on Clayton Street.

Flores was wanted in connection with the 1978 murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend Maria Verela. MCSO said Verela was stabbed to death in a Chicago apartment.

Flores has been living in Martin County with his wife and three children under the name of Aiden Garcia.

In 2000, a fingerprint check for a gun permit submitted by Flores under the name Aiden Garcia, alerted the FBI that he was living in Stuart. He was arrested, but released a short time later.

MCSO said that news reports indicated that Chicago prosecutors needed to collect more information on the case before charging Flores.

Martin County sheriff’s detectives were recently contacted again by Chicago authorities, who traveled back to Florida, to assist local law enforcement in making the arrest.

Flores is being held at the Martin County Jail without bond. He will be extradited to Chicago in a few weeks to face murder charges.
