WEIRSDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Two people died after a single-engine plane crashed and caught fire near in north Florida.

Marion County Fire and Rescue spokesman James Lucas says the plane went down Wednesday morning in Weirsdale, a small community near Ocala in Marion County.

Photos from the scene published by WESH-TV show a small white plane lying upside down near a tree in a field. The charred remains of the plane were covered by a tarp.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the plane took off from a grass airstrip near Ocala at 9:40 a.m.

Bergen says the agency is investigating the crash and will release more information later.
