CAPE CANVERAL, Fla. - (NBC) A piece of the World Trade Center is heading to the Sunshine State.

A 7-foot-long steel beam recovered from ground zero left New York City Wednesday on its way to the Kennedy Space Center.

Other beams from the destroyed Twin Towers have been given to municipalities over the years and some have been temporarily on display.

The beam, weighing nearly a ton, will become a permanent part of the Kennedy Space Center Fire Rescue 9/11 Memorial.
