A careless smoker caused some anxious moments in Okeechobee County Wednesday, according to the State Fire Marshal.

Flames were coming from a mobile home when Okeechobee County Fire Rescue arrived to fight the blaze in the 4900 block of SE Highway 441.

Crews put out the fire within 10 minutes but then learned 3 cats and a dog were still inside.

Using a Thermal Imaging Camera, firefighters say they found all 4 animals, brought them outside, and gave them oxygen.

They were then handed back to their owner.

The State Fire Marshal said the fire was due to “unattended smoking material in the room of origin.”
