Flagler Drive closing between North Bridge and 4th Street for 18-months for FDOT project

If your regular commute takes you down Flagler Drive between the North Bridge and 4th Street near downtown West Palm Beach, prepare yourself for an 18-month detour.

On Monday, the Florida Department of Transportation begins a project to tear up the stretch of road south of the bridge and then rebuild it three feet higher so that it matches the height of the bridge.

According to Mayor Jeri Muoio, the closure is "going to be painful," but the work will be a good thing once it's complete.

The reason for the project is to have the bridge and Flagler Drive meet so that drivers can enter and exit the bridge directly from Flagler. Currently, drivers have to go west before heading east over the bridge.

Flagler Drive will be open to only local traffic from Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard south to Banyan Boulevard, except between the North Bridge and 4th Street, which will be completely closed.
