ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - St Lucie County is starting the school year Monday with a new superintendent and a new fleet of school buses.

Wayne Gent is the new St Lucie County superintendent this year after serving as the head of the Palm Beach County schools.

Gent is familiar with the county, having previously served as principal at three county schools in St. Lucie County before his tenure in Palm Beach County.

Twenty-five new buses have been added to this year's fleet.  Those new buses will have video surveillance of both the students and the drivers.

Students' seats will also have shoulder harnesses for the first time, in addition to the lap belts that we have seen on the their buses.

Parents who have a child that attend Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce Westwood high schools will be given a laptop this year to use at school and home during the school year.

For the first 10 days of school, until route times are finalized, students should be at the bus stop about 10 minutes before the scheduled pickup time.  Drop-off times could be as much as 30 to 45 minutes later than the scheduled time.

The Palm Beach County school district is putting its new web-based school bus tracking system to the test for the first day of school Monday.

Each school bus has been outfitted with GPS to give parents the power to keep tabs on where their child's bus is.

Parents can use the new technology by logging onto the transportation page on the Palm Beach County school website and clicking "find my bus."

Parents need to register their kids to be able to use the system.
