Tropical Storm Danny forms in the Atlantic

Tropical Storm Danny has formed in the Atlantic.

At 500 PM the center of Tropical Storm Danny was located near latitude 10.9 North, longitude 37.5 West and moving toward the west near 12 mph.

A motion toward the west is expected tonight, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest on Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 mph with higher gusts and additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Danny is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Second Area of Low Pressure

A second area of low pressure will develop near Bermuda over the next few days.  Computer models do favor some strengthening of this low as it edges slowly north by the weekend.  The impact on South Florida could be some pretty big waves, eventually by next week.

It will move toward the west at 15 mph over the next several days.  Warm water, relatively low wind shear, and a moist environment will contribute to the development of "Invest 96L".

At this time, it is not something Floridians should worry about. It is, however, something we will keep monitoring. We are entering the most active eight weeks of Atlantic hurricane season.

Doesn't El Niño mean a slower hurricane season?

During El Niño years, we typically see fewer named storms, but that doesn't mean a storm won't be strong.
