A post on a community Facebook page in Pasco County has residents coming forward with pictures of an elusive bobcat roaming the area.

Cherie Risby of Wesley Chapel, Fla., said she was at a friend's house when they saw a large animal walking through the backyard. She took a picture, and her friend Eugenia McDonald posted it online.

The sighting occurred on Clearglades Drive in the Savannahs subdivision.

“It looked healthy,” Risby said. “I thought it was cool to see it. We screamed and it ran off.”

The animal, which can grow to twice the size of a house cat, is an excellent hunter.

“It’s scary, really scary,” Robin Segal said. “I would like to see it. That would be cool as long as they don't come up to my screened in porch.”

People who live in the area said with all the recent rains the animals are searching for higher ground.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials said bobcats are extremely common all over Florida and actually thrive in urban areas.

They said they do not pose a threat to humans, only small pets.

Until the water level drops neighbors urge people to be extra cautious with their animals and young children.
