(NBC) New research shows clothing worn by visitors to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) units may put babies at risk for a respiratory infection.

Four percent of swabs collected from the clothing of NICU visitors had detectable traces of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is more common in preemies.

More studies are needed to determine how long RSV remains infectious on clothing and whether separate gowns should be recommended when visiting the NICU.
