Officers ticket kids for good behavior

TUART, Fla. - Tickets similar to what's being handed out in Stuart have been issued across the country. Parents of ticket recipients often post photos and the stories behind the tickets to social media because of who they target.

"Did you see that right there," Cpl. Brian Bossio asks as he passes a house with an open garage. "A little girl helping them clean up the garage."

The City of Stuart Police Department is handing out more tickets this summer to people who deserve them most; children.

"Hey how you doing I'm Brian Bossio Stewart Police how are you," Bossio says as he approaches a dad in a garage with his daughter. "Your daughter here helping you clean the garage," Bossio asks. "I drove by and saw her helping you out and I was wondering if I could give her a ticket."

Positive Ticketing is a program where officers see children doing good in the community and ticket them on the spot. Kids ticketed like Casie do not have to pay a fine, but instead gets a treat.

"A free ice cream at Dairy Queen," Casie says grinning ear to ear.

So far the Positive Ticketing program is a hit. Officers are patrolling the streets and keeping an eye out for kids to ticket.

"They're running out of tickets," Bossio said. "They're calling me saying I need more, I need more."

There's also a serious side to the Positive Ticketing program.

According to Bossio the tickets will be tracked.

"We're going to look at juvenile offenses and see if in fact it does make a difference as far as juvenile complaints and juvenile crimes being committed," Bossio explained. "We're hoping to see that less kids will be getting into trouble while we have this program going."
