Local scientist says Erika could make landfall during full moon, causing flooding concerns

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. - Meteorologists say it could still be another day or two until South Florida residents have a better idea of whether or not Tropical Storm Erika could make landfall.

Regardless, some Treasure Coast residents are taking early precaution, as local scientists predict the possible storm could bring a greater risk for flooding.

Mark Perry, Executive Director at Florida Oceanographic, says there is supposed to be a full moon this weekend.

"This weekend, actually Friday to next Thursday, we'll have these very, very strong tides due to the full moon," Perry explained.

Strong tides aloing with the risk of a storm surge pushing more water toward the coastline could result in a greater flood risk, especially for sea side residents and those who live along waterways that feed into the ocean.

William Cox and his wife, Petey, live on Hutchinson Island in Martin County. Cox was an architect and designed the home himself. "Everywhere you look, you see water. I designed it so you can see the lake or you can see the ocean."

"We built it strong," Cox explained.

He knew the risks that came with the ocean view.

He's already been through several hurricanes in the 15-years he has lived on the island, including Jeanne and Francis.

"The biggest problem was the sand. It destroyed the driveway," Cox described.

He's started making note of things that he would want to protect should Erika become a Category 1 storm.

Wednesday night, he started taking care of the food that could spoil without power.

"Ice cream, we must eat it tonight!"

He's more worried about wind than flooding. "The danger we have is the coconuts around here. They're missiles in a storm."

He's hoping the preparations he's made so far are all he will have to make.

"I hope it's a non-event."
