Folks already gathering supplies for Erika

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- As Erika moves its way across the Atlantic, many of you are wondering when should I start preparing for the storm.

A lot of folks are already starting to prepare. We saw many people making small runs on batteries and flashlights tonight at Home Depot. However, we did find some people already getting all the essentials.

You could say Darryl Davis is seasoned when it comes to hurricane season.

"I’m getting flash lights, but I probably already have five at home,” said Davis.

Even though he's been through storms before, we still found him at Home Depot Thursday night getting the essentials to ride out Erika if necessary.

"Preparation is key,” said David. “Because it gives you comfort knowing that once the power goes out and water goes out you’re prepared to deal with it."

We saw plenty others tonight doing the same thing.

Here are a few things do in the next three days before the storm.

-Check to see if you're in an evacuations area, and have a plan if you need to leave

-Get your hurricane supplies and check your generator

-Get gas, food and cash

Once a watch is issued, then put up your storm shutters.

If you take Davis' advice, there’s no such thing as being over prepared.

"I’ll just grab water and I think I’ll be done for the evening, but tomorrow, my wife and I and my son will be at it again.”

Some other important tips: make arrangements for pets and loved ones who may need special assistance and gather all your important documents.
