As Erika approaches, neighbors worry about construction material on unfinished houses

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A construction site during a hurricane is a potential nightmare for neighbors. Loose tiles and portable toilets can become airborne damaging nearby homes.

Right now the roof at 216 Summa Street  is covered with piles of heavy loose Spanish tiles.

Frank Meroney lives across the street and worries the tiles will not be picked up before Tropical Storm Erika hits.

"Well we all know they become missiles in a storm," Meroney says. "Some of them are already slipping off the roof and they're not tied. They are loose bundles."

NewsChannel5 attempted to speak with the builder, but he declined an on camera interview. According to the builder, "the tiles will be gone or wrapped and strapped if the storm is a threat."

Meroney is hoping the builder will do more than strap the tiles. "I think the right thing is for him is to take those down and put them in the garage," Meroney said. "It would only take him a couple of hours to do that with a handful of guys."
