Vero Beach neighborhood flooded by Erika remnants

VERO BEACH, Fla. - While most people escaped the storms on Sunday with mostly just rain and wind, some residents of Village Green neighborhood in Vero Beach said they were stuck in their homes because of flooding.

"A river! It was like a river behind our house. It was really bad," Linda Emmel said.

With the afternoon soaking Sunday afternoon, many of the streets in the senior living neighborhood turned into lakes.

"I don't have boots, so I have to stay put. And I don't have a canoe either," 95-year-old Elizabeth Webb said.

Vero Beach received more than three inches of rain on Sunday.

"We had these intermittent downpours but I looked out and thought, 'Wow, that is collecting like a river," resident Karen Webb said.

Some neighbors tried to leave, but their cars stalled in the flood waters.

"I didn't want to ruin my car. There is a car down in front of my house that is stalled," Emmel said.

By late Sunday, most of the water had drained.

Neighbors remain optimistic saying the community has made improvements to the drainage system and the issues are improving.
