Summer task force in St. Lucie nets 300 arrests

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - A task force created this summer by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and Fort Pierce Police Department resulted in more than 300 arrests.

The agencies teamed up in an effort to deter crime through the summer while school was not in session, and hoped to foster better relationships with the community.

"This year's summer enforcement efforts were another huge success due to the cooperation between the citizens of Fort Pierce, the Fort Pierce Police Department, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, our Federal agencies. As criminal justice partners, we came together for the common goal of making our streets safer for our children to play, and for the pleasure of our residents, business owners, and visitors to enjoy the splendor of our beautiful city. The success of these efforts is a testament to what can be accomplished when our community works together," said Fort Pierce Police Chief Diane Hobley-Burney in a news release.

The operation, which spanned June 3 to Aug. 15, connected officers and deputies with more than 11,000 people.

Four sheriff's deputies and four Fort Pierce police officers were assigned to the operation. They patrolled together, generally from late afternoon through the early morning hours.

This task force supplemented the officers' normal patrol operations at their agencies.
