Teen charged as an adult in double stabbing

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Arielle Prieto, 15, shows the staples surgeons used after they had to cut her open to fix stab wounds to her heart and lung.  They are a visible reminder of a terrifying night with an uninvited guest.

“I got out of bed and I was like what are you doing here and he told me to be quiet and not to yell," Arielle recalled Monday.

Police say Arielle’s former boyfriend, 17-year-old Jacob Looney, had broken into their home.

“I yelled at him to get out of our house and he lunged at me and pushed me back on my bed and tried choking me," Arielle continued.

Arielle broke free and followed Looney to her mother’s room where she says they were fighting.  Arielle says Looney then went back at her.

“He came at me and I didn't know he had a weapon of any sort and he started punching me in the stomach and my adrenaline was rushing.  So I left and went back into my room.  After we called 911 it started to hurt.  I wasn't able to breathe as well and I looked down and saw all the blood and I realized he had stabbed me."

The mother and daughter ended up in the hospital.

Prosecutors said state statutes give them the authority to charge 17-year-olds as adults if it’s in the public interest.

“In this case the felonies are very severe, the alleged crimes that he committed are very severe so we felt justice and the public policy mandates it," said Assistant State Attorney Steven Gosnell.

In an effort to get back to normal, Arielle went to Fort Pierce Central Monday to check in on one of her teachers and see friends for the first time. Her mother Janice calls her a hero.

"She's very strong, very strong," said Janice Prieto admiringly.

“I’m glad this hasn’t affected me too much. Because this is our home and I’m not going to let him ruin that for us," added Arielle.

The alleged attack happened the same day Janice Prieto got a restraining order against Looney.

The community is now rallying around the family.  This Friday, a golf tournament will be held at Gator Trace in Fort Pierce to help offset the family's medical and other expenses.  If you're interested in participating, call 772-464-7442.
