City of West Palm Beach padlocking outlets

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- It's about to get a little harder to find an electrical outlet and power up in downtown West Palm Beach.

"If I know I didn't have nowhere to stay and I see all this stuff, I'll make my own little home," explained West Palm Beach resident Tarik Morgan. And it's exactly why the city says they're putting padlocks on electrical boxes downtown.

"Basically we're trying to discourage people from hanging out here and turning this into a make shift camp," says Elliot Cohen, Communications Director for the City of West Palm Beach.

People who use the Waterfront Common agree with the locks and say they're needed.

According to West Palm Beach resident Ashley Lay the locks are a good idea for safety reasons. "It could be dangerous," Lay added.

And Morgan agrees. "People plugging up, you know like microwaves and stuff like that," he says. "It's a little whatever."

The city says things like electric stoves and portable microwaves are not what the outlets are for, but that the outlets are for official events.

"For the GreenMarket, for SunFest, for the Boat Show," Cohen detailed. "For official events where you need to plug in and get some power."

The city says outlets will also be available during permitted events like weddings and private parties.
