Jupiter residents worry after dismembered cat found in the neighborhood last weekend

JUPITER, Fla. - A Jupiter pet owner is looking for answers tonight.  Her cat was found dismembered in her neighborhood last weekend.

Residents think it could be the work of a person playing a sick joke. Animal Care and Control saying it might be something else.

Either way,  residents are worried.

Fran Barnett made a gruesome discovery in her neighbors yard last Saturday  in the Jupiter Estates area.

"I pulled up in my neighbors driveway and about right here, I saw something that looked like a kitten, but when I got out it was actually a cat," she said.

Mutilated and dismembered, Fran said it was missing the back half of it's body.

She said, "And it was cut, not down below. It was cut right below the breast bone area."

Fran quickly realized it was her neighbors cat, Rocky.  She called her, who then called Animal Care and Control.

"She was bending over and really upset and I came outside and she was crying," said Barnett.

The cat had been a part of the family for a decade.  Rocky's owner believes someone cut her cat in half.  ACC saying it could be a coyote.

"The chances are pretty high that it would be a coyote but there's still a possibilty it could be something more sinister than that," said Captain Dave Walesky, with ACC.

He said there was another similar case reported in the same area, several months ago.

"We have had a number of cases in Palm Beacch county where pieces of cats have been found and it can usually be traced back to coyote," he said.

But Neighbors around here, not taking any chances.

"Don't want to have them go outside by themselves, whether it's a coyote or a person but more so a person, a psycho."

Swabs of the remains of Rocky are now being sent to a lab in Gainesville.  Forensics will be able to determine if coyote saliva is present.
