Emotional first day in St. Lucie County school bus wrongful death civil trial

A civil trial is underway in the wrongful death case of a 9-year-old boy killed in a school bus crash on the Treasure Coast in 2012.

The parents of Aaron Beauchamp are suing the St. Lucie County School District claiming the bus driver was negligent in that fatal crash at the intersection of State Road 70 and Midway Road.

It was a very emotional first day in the courtroom.

Jurors saw the school bus cameras at the time of impact. Seconds later, kids are screaming and the driver is running around yelling, “oh no what did I do.”  You then hear someone say, “you pulled right in front of the truck.”

A picture of Aaron in a soccer jersey was placed before the jury and a close friend of the Beauchamps recalled what many area soccer players did at Fort Pierce Central after the funeral.

“The kids carried Aaron’s casket out to the soccer field so he could have one last look,” said friend Vicki Rodriguez.

The attorneys for the Beauchamps say this case came down to a matter of seconds.  Had the bus driver waited another 10-20 seconds, they say they would not be in the courtroom today.

Attorneys for the school district allege that the truck driver is also at fault in this case along with the bus manufacturer for creating what they call a faulty product.
