Deputies remove credit card skimmer device from gas pump at Sunoco station in Vero Beach

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Indian River County Sheriff's Office says a credit card skimmer has been removed from a gas pump at the Sunoco gas station at 2465 27th Avenue SW in Vero Beach.

Staff at the gas station say they received several calls from customers saying their cards had been fraudulently used after visiting the station.

Staffers were able to identify a skimmer device attached to one of the pumps and immediately called the Sheriff's office.

Deputies removed the device and are investigating  who may have placed the device in the pump.

"The pump with the skimmer attached did not have security tape on the exterior of the pump to ensure that it was not tampered with," said Indian River County Sergeant Milo Thornton.

Officials with the Sheriff's office say you should always inspect a gas pump or ATM before inserting your card. Gas pumps should have a security seal or tape on the outside showing that they have been inspected.

Sheriff Deryl Loar said, "Our detectives are working today on several good leads in this case. We will track down whoever placed this device and bring them to justice."

Any customers of this Sunoco location should check their credit card statement for fraudulent activity.

You may contact the Indian River County Sheriff's Office non-emergency number at 772-978-6240 to report fraudulent credit card activity at this or any other location.
