Downtown coworking space one step closer to reality

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The traditional office set up doesn't always work for start-ups and those that are a company of one. Now there's a workspace solution in the works in downtown West Palm Beach.

"This is potentially our coworking space," explains Palm Beach Technology Association Executive Director Joe Russo. "On this side, we're going to be placing offices for people that need the privacy to make their company successful."

What could become a coworking space in downtown West Palm Beach is a little rough on the eyes for now, but as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

"This is our dedicated desk area," Russo explains. "We're going to place over 20 desks here for local entrepreneurs that they can lease out and be here every day."

Kyle Bagley, owner of Data Hawk Technologies says he loves the space, "I love it. I don't have any employees and I couldn't afford the rent as a startup so this is perfect."

Once the space in the former Halsey and Griffith Office Supplies building is cleaned up, it will be available to start-ups and entrepreneurs who want to work downtown.

"Techies don't like to work in strip malls," says Raphael Clemente, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Authority . "If you look around at what's happening here in West Palm Beach we are getting younger, we are getting denser we are bringing in a lot of talent."

And with new talent comes big dreams.

"I think the opportunity for building the next cool thing whether it be an app or a website is destined to come out of here," Bagley added.

The 3,500 square foot space that's become a storage area is already attracting potential coworkers.

"We have a running list," Russo explained. "As of today that list has 37 people interested in being a part of this."

The plan is to open the coworking space in the next few months, with all the necessary amenities.

Amenities Bagley says include a ping table, cots to take quick naps and coffee. "I don't think there's anything else I need," Bagley says. "Oh internet! Got to have internet. Have to have internet. Fiber would be awesome. If I could have Google come in and put fiber in here, oh my gosh, I'm such a nerd."

The next phase of launching the coworking space in downtown West Palm Beach is to secure funding for construction and adding furniture.
