PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla-- Many of you are gearing up to celebrate this holiday weekend. Well, law enforcement agencies across the county are gearing up, too, to making sure you don’t drink and get behind the wheel.
Drive sober or get pulled over is the nationwide campaign that local departments, like the Palm Beach Gardens Police, are taking very seriously to keep you safe this holiday weekend.
Wednesday night NewsChannel 5 was along for the ride with DUI traffic enforcement officer Melinda Hanton as she and her team amp up patrols searching for impaired drivers.
“They’ll go out and they’ll drink, and they’ll usually drink to excess. (They) think they’re okay to drive, get behind the wheel,” said Hanton.
The traffic unit has gone to split shift and higher numbers to not only deter folks from drinking and driving, but if they are behind the wheel to get them off the road.
“Unfortunately, we see a lot of people get into serious car accidents, when they get seriously injured or kill people, and that’s what we’re trying to prevent,” said Hanton.
The campaign started August 21 and lasts through September 7.
