Piles of seaweed on Boynton Beach raising Labor Day weekend concerns for residents

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Seaweed piling up along Boynton Beach has beach goers considering another location for Labor Day.

It's not the view Rachel Bassetti is hoping for this Labor Day weekend.

"It's gross," she said.

Piles and piles of seaweed lining the Boynton Beach shoreline.  It's visible, starting at the south end of the Inlet.

It's mushy, gushy and smells really bad.

Bassetti said, "Usually it's very clear and beautiful and today's really nasty."

Rachel comes several times a week with her kids, but she's staying out of the water for now.

"I don't like, I don't like to swim in it at all. I prefer to be clear to snorkel and enjoy," she said.

Wally Majors with Boynton Beach Parks and Recreation said,"There seems to be a little bit more than normal but generally it just something that occurs in nature."

He said this could be remnants from Erika. Crews have been checking the beaches since the storm settled last week.

Residents also complained about a similar sight in July.

"We rake it up, but again, we can do that and within an hour, if the winds are blowing in, the seaweed will come back," added Majors.

City leaders are hoping this won't keep beach goers away for the holiday.

"We're dealing with an environment that's ultimately up to mother nature and certainly we're very grateful when the weather is good and the beaches look great.  But there are going to be times that are just well beyond our realm of control," he said.

Crews are expected to be out Friday to clean up as much seaweed before the weekend.
