South Bay man with disability inspires people around him

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Sean Garrick loves his job at the Riviera Beach Police Department. "I'm so happy to get up every morning."

"I help people of the public get their arrest reports and other reports that they need. I do the citations and get them ready for the courthouse."

But getting there five days a week from his South Bay home isn't easy. "There is a connection bus for people with disabilities and it's door to door service pick me up in front of my house. I get picked up between 5:30 and 6 to try and get here by 8."

He doesn't mind the long days because he's used to persevering when life gets tough. More than 10 years ago, a car accident left Sean paralyzed. He persevered through rehab. Sean said, "I went back to high school graduated from high school then went to college and graduated from college."

He persevered again when no one would hire him. The organization Independence Works, which helps the disabled find jobs, stepped in. Maria Conde with the organization said, "He's motivated, he tenacious and he is an optimist. He never gives up, he is determined."

Now on the job for a year-- Sean is getting noticed. "Sean has a lot of knowledge in regards to technology, computer software and things like that."

He's encouraging others who have disabilities, to never give up."I go to work with a positive attitude and say I'm glad to be here, because before I couldn't do it, but now i can do it."
