Pinellas deputy saves life of choking woman at a Clearwater IHOP

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Deputy David Brenn saved a woman's life early Tuesday morning when he helped to dislodge a piece of steak from her throat during breakfast.

Brenn and another deputy were finishing their meal break just before 1:00 a.m. at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) at 30200 US 19 N in Clearwater when he noticed a woman wheezing at the table next to them.

The victim, Brianna Torres, 24, was in obvious distress and was actively attempting to dislodge something from her throat.

Brenn, 27, asked the woman if she was choking, and she nodded her head. Brenn called for assistance from paramedics, and asked Torres if he could attempt the Heimlich maneuver.  She again nodded yes.

On his third thrust, Deputy Brenn successfully dislodged a piece of steak from the victim's throat allowing her to breathe normally.

Paramedics responded and evaluated Torres, who stated she was uninjured.
