(NBC) - A rare white alligator has passed away at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans.

The 28-year-old alligator was formally known as "spots."

The cause of his death is being investigated.

"Spots" had a rare genetic condition called leucism that reduces the color pigmentation in the skin.

He was one of the 17 alligator hatchlings recovered by the Louisiana Land and Exploration Company in 1986, and believed to be one of fewer than 15 white alligators in the U.S.

The gator had been living at the Audubon Aquarium since its opening in 1990.
