WPB Police create team to combat gangs and juvenile crime

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Continued gun violence in one area of West Palm Beach is causing police to step up their game.

On Tuesday they announced the creation of two crime fighting teams that will put specialized officers on the front lines.

These teams made up of 5 officers and a sergeant will do more than just patrol the streets. Police say each “neighborhood enhancement team” will be one officer specializing in juveniles, while another focuses on gangs.

West Palm Beach Captain David Bernhardt says the teams will supplement patrols already in the northwest area (between 36 and 4 Street, east of Australian Avenue).

14 people have been shot and killed in that area this year. Police say not many have been arrested for those crimes.

Captain Bernhardt met with city commissioners and the mayor Tuesday; he says police are having trouble solving cases because no one comes forward with information.

“You see the instances where nobody cares until it's their family member,” Bernhardt said. “Well we need you to care because it's a person from your community."

Police hope they can build relationships with people in the community through these new teams.

The captain says they've already advertised the positions in house and expect for them to be in place by the first week in October.
