(Associated Press/WPTV web team) A 19-year-old athlete who attended Palm Beach State College died and five others were injured in a spray of gunfire in the parking lot of an Ocala nightclub over the weekend.

Marion County sheriff's officials said someone drove through a crowd of people outside Cloud 9 early Sunday morning and opened fire. Authorities said Benetria Robinson, 19, died at the scene.

Five others were taken to the hospital.

Robinson was a 19-year-old sophomore at PBSC, according to a posting on the school's website.

She played on the women's basketball team and was expected to play for the Panther softball squad.

"It is always tragic when someone loses their life to a violent act but particularly when it is a young adult who is just in the early stages of life's journey. I cannot even begin to imagine the scope and depth of grief that Benetria's family and close friends are experiencing. All I can say on behalf of the entire athletic department is that Benetria will be sorely missed and long remembered. We pray that her family will be comforted by their faith and the good memories of Benetria's too short life," Palm Beach State Athletic Director Dr. David Holstein said in a statement.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports three of the victims are in serious but stable condition and two received non-life-threatening injuries. Their names are not being released for their protection.

Authorities estimate 1,000 people gathered at the crime scene after the shooting.

No suspects have been identified.
