Is Palm Beach County School bus overcrowding issue overblown?

A Palm Beach County school transportation official is taking exception to criticism from a vocal state representative.

Palm Beach County School District Transportation Services Director Dave Davis says bus overcrowding alleged by State Representative Irv Slosberg is no greater than what the school district usually sees.

Davis says the overcrowding is a normal occurrence that happens in the first weeks of school.

Representative Slosberg disagrees.

He says he’s received many pictures, emails and phone calls from the public alleging it is much worse.

After repeated calls and emails by NewsChannel 5 asking him to back up the number of complaints he’s received, Slosberg showed one picture, one email and one phone call specifically complaining about overcrowding.

The school district says the issue is being made out to be greater than what it is.

"It's a normal type of activity that happens every year. You have to balance your loads out. We have 100,000 students that are eligible to ride any given day and we average about 60,000 a day, every morning and afternoon," Davis said.

Representative Slosberg says he is not buying the excuses. He is headed to Tallahassee to pressure the school district to make changes.

He’s also requesting an operational audit to see what caused the underlying bus issues.
