3 treated at Roosevelt Middle School in West Palm Beach after evacuations

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A gas leak at Roosevelt Middle School in West Palm Beach forced firefighters to evacuate the school Thursday afternoon.

Luckily, students had a half day today in Palm Beach County schools, so the students were already on their way out of class when the evacuation began.

According to Diana Matty, assistant chief with West Palm Beach Fire Rescue, some people within the school were overcome by fumes from an unknown source.

Hazmat crews believe the origin of the scent started near the A/C chiller room, but have not determined where the fumes came from.

Three people were treated for issues related to Thursday's evacuation.

One person was treated for respiratory issues, while two others were treated for heat related problems after being forced outside.

West Palm Beach Fire Rescue said one of the affected individuals was a teacher.

Matty says if it wasn't a half day today, students may have been treated for issues related to the gas leak as well.

Fumes from a gas leak can cause headaches and nausea, and can have a greater effect on people with smaller bodies like children.

"People process chemicals at a lower rate when they're smaller just based on body size. So, not that they're children-- but based on their body weight," Matty says.
