Rain continues for second day on Treasure Coast, Vero Beach residents make the most of flooding

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Rain soaked portions of the Treasure Coast Thursday for the second day in a row.

Neighborhoods from Martin County up to Indian River County saw inches of rain covering their streets Wednesday, which subsided slowly Thursday.

More rain Thursday didn't help dry things out.

In the Stonebridge neighborhood in Vero Beach, residents made the most of nearly a foot of water covering their roads.

Kids were seen swimming, and riding their bikes and boogie boards through the water.

Others broke out their kayaks for the rare chance to cruise through their own neighborhood.

Residents say the water in a nearby canal had not been lowered since the rain on Wednesday, causing the drainage system in their neighborhood to back up.

On Hutchinson Island in parts of Martin County and St. Lucie County, flooding continued to subside Thursday.

Some neighborhoods still had a few inches of water covering the streets. Sidewalks and some parking lots were still underwater along Ocean Dr.

Kathy Rocker lives in the Holiday Out Mobile Home Community where rain caused flooding Wednesday.

She says the neighborhood floods during most heavy rains, but back-to-back days of rain caused the flooding to be worse.

"There were times when the water would just stay and you know, you've got to go to work, you're going through in a suit, you just got to get to work and roll your pants up and that's it," Rocker said.

WPTV meteorologists expect rain to continue into Friday.
