St. Lucie County detectives investigate video showing man pointing gun at deputy cruiser

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. -- A video circulating on social media shows a man pointing a gun at a St. Lucie County sheriff's deputy's cruiser.

It is raising concern with other law enforcement officers.

In the video posted to Snap Chat, one man is seen shooting a hand gun in an open field. Later, he and another man are seen driving in a car, drinking a beer and one of the men points a handgun at a St. Lucie County cruiser while laughing.

"They don't take this seriously. They don't take this behavior seriously," said Luis Blasco, President of the Fraternal order of Police Lodge 50 in Palm Beach County.

Blasco has been a law enforcement officer for more than a decade. He finds the video reckless and disrespectful.

"It's becoming the norm which is sad. It's very sad," Blasco said.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office identified the two men in the video, but have not released their identities as they are not facing any criminal charges.

Detectives say the men were shooting the gun in a rural area where doing so is legal.

They also say the cruiser was unmanned. To Blasco, that doesn't lessen the seriousness of what they did.

"What if a deputy was behind them and had seen the gun? They're putting themselves and the deputy in a dangerous situation," Blasco said.

Blasco says it highlights the fear he and other law enforcement officers share every day: Careless gun owners and people with little respect for the law.

"We're already on high alert as it is... If you really want to have fun, there's other things to do other than act stupid. Because, that's what this is. It's acting stupid," Blasco said.

The sheriff's office says detectives met with the two young men and their parents and decided to allow the parents to discipline them for their actions.

Detectives say the men admitted they made bad choices and would make better choices in the future.
