Kirsten Mundell: Daughter of fallen officer gets surprise at wedding

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. - (KOMO/CNN) - It's been nearly six years since Washington State Deputy Kent Mundell lost his life in the line of duty, but it’s still hard on his family – especially since his daughter recently got married.

"Any wedding is a big deal and not having my dad there was a lot harder for all of us," daughter Kirsten Mundell said.

She had a seat reserved for her dad in the front row of her wedding. The seat held items that reminded her of her father.

"It meant a lot knowing that we were able to save a spot for him and knowing that I felt him there, I knew he was there," Mundell said.

The back of her wedding dress held another tribute. She had thin blue lacing on her dress that symbolizes her father’s profession.

A family friend walked her down the aisle, and he started the father-daughter dance. While the two were dancing, another police officer tapped on Mundell’s shoulder and asked for a dance.

"He said there's a whole line of us and right as he said that is when the next officer cut in. I just broke down," Mundell said.

It was moving not just because of this young woman and the support she was getting, but also it shows how the loss still cuts deep.

"People need to know that their family's lives go on but they're still affected by it every day,” Mundell said. “I mean I know they're always there for me, and if I need them, I never thought they'd just show up. It was the best wedding surprise ever."
