Laronn Shelton: Lake Worth man charged after gunfire exchanged with Broward Co. deputy on Aug. 25

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A suspect was charged Wednesday after a Broward County deputy exchanged gunfire Aug. 25 with a man at the Interstate 95 and Southern Boulevard northbound ramp.

According to officials, Laronn Shelton, 34, of Lake Worth, Fla., was already incarcerated at the Palm Beach County Jail.  He admitted to being armed with a firearm, exiting his vehicle with it, and firing it. He claimed the victim fired at him first.

Investigators say that bullet cartridges led them to Shelton.

Shelton will face a Palm Beach County judge Thursday morning. He faces attempted first-degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon charges.

West Palm Beach Police say the shootout started when Broward County Detective Elisa Galindez was on her way home to Palm Beach County and pulled over to help what she thought was a disabled vehicle.

Police said a gunman opened fire at the deputy on the northbound off ramp of I-95 at Southern Boulevard.

Galindez returned fire and drove to safety at the corner of Southern Boulevard and Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach.

The deputy's unmarked vehicle had a bullet hole in the driver's side window.  No one was hurt in the shooting.
