Thieves run distraction scam on elderly woman in Delray Beach; police warn to be on look out

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - A warning tonight for families with elderly loved ones.

Local police department is warning residents about an old scheme that's making it's round again.

The scammers convincing residents they need to look at their backyard, while another makes their way inside.

This woman’s hand is missing the one thing that matters most to her.

"I love that ring, we used it in our wedding ceremony, now it's gone," she said.

Gone after Delray Beach police say three men pulled a distraction scheme and robbed her. The 79-year-old ,who doesn't want to show her face says the men showed up on Bond Way Wednesday, telling her they needed to exterminate her yard for spiders.

"He described this long process that he was going to do and he kept repeating it," she said.

Keeping her distracted, the victim said while she was outside, one of the men, was inside taking her jewelry.

"He went through my jewelry box and took whatever little jewelry I had," said the victim. "Which isn't much or valuable, but he took it."

But the thieves weren't done yet. Now all outback, they ask the elderly woman for a bucket of soapy water.  When she came back, she says the man sprayed her hands with something and quickly apologized.

"Oh my god, that was the acid, I shouldn't have done that, you're gonna have to wash that off right away."

The man told her to wash her hands and drop in her rings into the bucket.

She said, "Left me with the bucket with the rings in it but the rings weren't in there. One ring was and I got that one. that's this one, but my wedding ring."

It was gone. As she was searching in the bucket, the men packed up and took off.

"He was hustling me," she said. "I would say look out because they're on the move. They're here to take what they can."

The victim said one of the men appeared to be in his 20's.  The other man was in his 50's and the third man was in his 70's.

Police say be cautious of anyone who comes to your home and tries to talk their way inside or get you to come outside.
