Neighbors ask city officials for help getting traffic light at busy intersection

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla-- How safe are your kids crossing the street to the bus stop everyday?

One Palm Beach County community says not safe enough, especially after a little girl was run over on her way to the bus stop less than two weeks ago.

"I heard the kid scream and a thump. I immediately dropped my bags." The image of a little girl hit by a car still haunts Carolyn Taylor.

"That could have been one of my students, so all I could do was just run to her and render aid."

The charter school principal was leaving the Foxhall neighborhood on her way to school when it happened.

The 11-year-old was crossing a busy, dark Haverhill Road at Willow Pond to get to her bus stop. There is no traffic light, crossing guard or cross walk at that intersection.

"That's an 11 year-old child who's still in the hospital, in a coma, and I don't think it's right. We need a light out here," said Taylor.

These neighbors say they have feared a tragedy like this for a while and say something needs to change.

"The traffic is terrible," said another neighbor Carolyn Briggs. "It takes sometimes 10 to 15 minutes to get in or out of there. They're flying. It's dangerous. It's scary."

Monday night the Foxhall homeowners association drove their message home.

At Monday night's commission meeting,  HOA president,  Carlos Pineiroa,  asked West Palm Beach City Commissioners for help in getting a traffic light at the intersection.

"The more support that we get the better chance we have at getting the light, I think," said Pineiroa.

The mayor agreed that a light is needed and said she would help the HOA deal with the county.

HOA tells us this isn't the first request for the light saying that the county had conducted traffic studies at the intersection in the past but has denied the request.

WFLX FOX 29 has not been able to reach the county's engineering department, the department that conducts these studies.

The Palm Beach County School District says this bus stop is under review.
