State releases FSA test scores

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The state released its preliminary student scores for the Florida Standards Assessment test. Back in the spring school districts reported issues with this very test and are now complaining it will count towards their school grades.

The Palm Beach County School’s Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa denounced the test results, he’s asking for a grace period before using the results to hold students and teachers accountable.

"We believe that the information and data, the way it was collected was flawed,” Avossa said.

The FSA replaced the FCAT in 2014. The test will be used to evaluate teachers’ performance and to determine school grades for the 2014-2015 school year.

"If they hold true to the fact that learning gains might not be included then we could see upwards of 30 plus schools in Palm Beach County as rated F."

Bridget Hammond a mother of 4 believes the FSA is a horrible benchmark. She says if the FCAT wasn’t a proven test, why do lawmakers think this new one will work.

“I think they're just jumping from the frying pan to the fire,” Hammond said. “Show me where this test has worked somewhere else."

Overall, the School District of Palm Beach County says they outperformed the state in EOC exams for Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry. Palm Beach County students also scored at the highest levels in English, Language Arts and Mathematics when compared to the state's seven large urban school districts.

Students will receive their official individual reports in late October.

School grades may be available by the end of the year; the state has yet to announce the impact these scores will have on the grading.
