State to hear request for audit on PBC school buses

State lawmakers decide to hear a request to audit the Palm Beach County school’s transportation department.

Rep. Irv Slosberg asked for the review and the Legislative Audit Committee will hear this proposal Monday.

The review would be in addition to one already in progress. Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa said their independent attorney is finishing up its investigation.

"If we make a commitment as a school district to offer transportation then we better deliver on that,” Avossa said. “It's really embarrassing for the district and I'm going to hold those responsible accountable for it.”

Avossa says he’s asked a group of experts to come in during late October to offer an action plan. He says it will help prevent this year’s issues.

Avossa is now asking for the state to allow his investigation to take its course.

“Rather than the state spend more money and time doing another audit let me go and share with them what I've learned as the new superintendent and the things I'm going to put in place to make sure it doesn't happen again,” Avossa said.

Rep. Slosberg is confident about his meeting with the audit committee Monday. He tells FOX 29 his audit is free and will serve its purpose. Slosberg got involved after he says parents contacted him about late and overcrowded buses.

Ninety percent of buses are running on time, but Avossa says they are still having issues. Even though the district is happy to report that they finally have one driver for every route, Avossa says 5 to 10 percent of drivers continue to call out daily.

The school district has about 30 substitute driver vacancies at this time.
