Local colleges say they are prepared for active shooter scenarios

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - As if students didn't have enough to worry about, based on recent events, you can add random acts of violence to the list.

This year alone, we've seen 45 school shootings nationwide - 17 of them on college campuses.

Since Sandy Hook back in 2012, Thursday's shooting in Oregon is the 142nd shooting to take place on school grounds.

"It's a little terrifying to think that it's a campus close to our size," says Kennedy Cross, a Palm Beach Atlantic student.

Thursday's tragedy just the latest one to take lives and rattle nerves.

Palm Beach State College tells us they perform regular active shooter drills with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's office.

One of those drills taking place next week - a lockdown drill.

"Your first response needs to be protection," says Dr. Grace Truman with Palm Beach State College. "How do you do that, how do you lock down yourself and your classroom safely."

On their website, this checklist available to students lays out what to do in shooter scenarios.

A video, also on the site, puts those tips into action.

Over at Palm Beach Atlantic University, their crisis management team meets and trains regularly.

"There have also been scenarios where the West Palm Beach Police Department have come on our campus to do training on our campus," says Kevin Abel, Dean of Students at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Technology on campuses like his has become essential to safety.

"Whether it's a weather event or an active shooter, we have a text message alert system in place for our students," he says.
