WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) — A 21-year-old central Florida man is in critical condition after being shot during a confrontation with a sheriff's deputy.

The shooting happened at a busy intersection Thursday afternoon as deputies pursued a car driven by Christian Joy.

Seminole County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Mahan was shot in the ankle and released from the hospital Thursday night.

The Orlando Sentinel reports Joy was released from prison Sept. 1 after serving two years following a conviction for selling marijuana and being a convicted felon in possession of a gun.

Authorities say Joy's car matched one believed to be involved in a series of home burglaries. When they tried to pull him over, Joy didn't stop. A chase continued for several miles before the confrontation.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating possible charges.
