The innocent-looking lines and fuzzy pixels of the bar code actually contain a treasure trove of passenger information that can easily be accessed.

Using free online readers, criminals can decode the barcode to reveal information including passenger name and phone number as well as frequent flier number and flight information.

Security experts say travelers can protect themselves by using electronic boarding passes on their smart phone or properly discarding paper boarding passes.

They warn against leaving your boarding pass in the airplane seat pocket, which many of us do.
