FHP trooper struck, pinned by SUV during traffic stop near Palm Beach Gardens

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper was struck by a sport-utility vehicle during a routine traffic stop on Florida's Turnpike in Palm Beach Gardens early Sunday.

FHP says Trooper Mac Mickens pulled over a car for a traffic stop and walked from the passenger side of that vehicle to return to the driver's side of his patrol car when an SUV went from the left lane to the right lane and struck him.

FHP says Trooper Mickens' belt helped save his life. He was pinned between the SUV and his patrol car, but FHP says the belt acted as a buffer and gave him enough space in between the two vehicles.

Mickens was able to contact dispatch on his radio and let them know he had been injured.

Mickens was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach where he is reportedly in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the SUV was also taken to the hospital out of precaution. FHP says he is OK.

After striking the trooper's patrol car, the SUV hit the back of the car that had been pulled over.

No one in that vehicle was injured.
