Palm Beach Gardens officer involved in deadly shooting identified; was in plain clothes

Palm Beach Gardens police say an on-duty officer in plain clothes and driving an unmarked vehicle was involved in the deadly shooting that took a man’s life on an I-95 exit ramp early Sunday morning.

The officer  was identified as Nouman Raja.

Police say he stopped to investigate what he thought was an abandoned vehicle on the southbound ramp at PGA Boulevard.

As he got out of his vehicle an ‘armed subject’ confronted him, according to a news release from the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department.

The officer fired resulting in the death of Corey Jones, according to the release.

Family members said Jones was a drummer who played in various bands and churches in the area.

Raja is currently on paid administrative leave.

According to the Palm Beach Gardens police Facebook post , Officer Raja was hired on April 13, 2015.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident

Police say they have no further information to release at this time.
