Steven Klix: Man sought in Hurricane Wilma scams nabbed decade later

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla - After Hurricane Wilma came roaring ashore, Kim Walko remembers neighbors helping neighbors on her street in Stuart.

“Everybody came out and helped each other with repairs and picking up and putting our neighborhood back together," said Walko.

She remembers Steven Klix among those lending a hand.

“He didn’t seem to be a bad neighbor. Didn’t seem to be a bad person.”

Walko recalled Klix left the area years ago. There have been many names on the Normandy Court mailbox since. But Klix left with lots of unfinished business.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder says Klix took deposits to the tune of $33,000 to fix screened enclosures.  But “Steve the Screen Guy” fled in 2007 after pleading guilty to charges of contracting without a license during a state of emergency.

“So not only was he coming in without a license and contracting, then he wasn’t even doing the job.  It was bad enough he said he was a licensed contractor and would do the business then he compounds it by not doing anything and leaving people doubly victimized," said Sheriff Snyder.

Klix was picked up in a suburb of New Orleans Tuesday night and will be extradited back to Martin County.  He also has outstanding warrants out of St. Lucie County.
