MCSO checks on sex offenders, predators before Halloween

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla-- Just one week before Halloween, and the Martin County Sheriff's Office is taking extra steps to make sure your kids are safe when it comes time to trick or treat.

There are 177 registered sex offenders in Martin County. NewsChannel 5 was along for the ride as deputies made surprise checks to make sure these offenders and predators are in compliance, especially with Halloween right around the corner.

Wednesday night's detail was surprise checks on about 40 of the registered sex offenders.

"That's the whole point of an operation like tonight, just to knock on the door, make sure the offender is where they've registered their address," said Detective Mathew Horton. "Just letting them know, hey we're here checking up on them."

The plan is to have checked on all 177 registered sex offenders before Halloween.

"We thought it was very important to get out in front of that," said Sheriff William Snyder. "To make sure we do all of our sex offender, sex predator checks now, and give them some clear direction. Do not have interaction with children. If at all possible, keep your lights off, and don't get involved even in the giving out of candy."

For Jensen Beach mom Marina Kershanick, knowing deputies are making these checks gives her an extra sense of security for when its time to trick or treat.

"It makes me feel really good. I think that's great and it makes me feel safe for myself and for my children."

If you are uncomfortable taking your kids door to door to trick or treat, MCSO will be holding a trunk or treat here at the Sheriff's Office.
